WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- All Blacks utility back Sonny Bill Williams has signed a one-year contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union and will play for the Waikato Chiefs in next years Super 15 tournament. Nolan Ryan Jersey . The 26-year-old rugby league convert left New Zealand on Monday to holiday in Panama after being part of the World Cup-winning All Blacks team, apparently with his future unresolved. The NZRU had given Williams until Monday evening to decide whether he would renew his contract which expired at the end of the World Cup. Williams had been silent on his plans, although he tweeted on Monday that "Hamilton looks nice" in a reference to the Chiefs North Island base. He played in the centres and on the wing for the All Blacks during the World Cup, when his proven versatility earned him a place on the reserves bench for the Oct. 23 final against France -- New Zealands most important match in decades. "Were delighted that Sonny has chosen to continue playing his rugby in New Zealand next year," NZRU general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorenson said. "He was exciting to watch in Super rugby this year and he played an important role in the spectacular Rugby World Cup-winning All Blacks side." Williams was a star player in Australias National Rugby League before quitting in 2008 to play rugby union for the French club Toulon. He remained in France until signing to play for his native New Zealand in 2010, joining the Canterbury Crusaders. In deciding on Monday to re-sign with New Zealand, Williams turned down potentially more lucrative offers from French rugby clubs and Australian rugby league teams. His previous contract with the NZRU contained a clause which allowed him to continue to develop his career as a professional boxer. http://www.cavaliersoffi... . Russia finished on top of Group F with 22 points, one point ahead of second-place Portugal which beat 10-man Luxembourg 3-0 and will go into next months European playoffs for a berth in Brazil. Amber Hollands team gave up a steal of one in the 10th and another steal of three in an extra end to hand Quebecs Marie-France Larouche an 8-5 win. Holland had a draw to the eight-foot rings for the win, but her throw was well short of the house. "That last draw, just kicked a little light and just didnt adjust," Holland said. "Ill park right it away. I made a lot of good shots that game so Ill just focus on those." So Canada settled into a three-way tie for first at 5-2 with B.C.s Kelly Scott and Manitobas Jennifer Jones. Second Tammy Schneider was back in Canadas lineup for the evening game. Shed pulled a muscle in her leg the night before and sat out the afternoons 7-4 win over Ontario. Schneider missed her first shot of the extra end and wobbled in her delivery of the second, but said her knee was not an issue. "There was no pain or soreness," Schneider said. "I just didnt get my feet underneath me. I just didnt get a good throw off." Jones won a pair of games and Scott split hers Tuesday. The co-leaders were chased by a pack at 4-3 including Quebec, Saskatchewans Michelle Englot, New Brunswicks Rebecca Atkinson and Albertas Heather Nedohin. It was a big day for both host Alberta and Quebec as they stayed in the playoff hunt with two wins apiece. "Were calling it Turnaround Tuesday," Nedohin said. "I think weve played consistently throughout, but Tuesday was a good day." Ontarios Tracy Horgan was 3-4. Kim Dolan of Prince Edward Island, Heather Strong of Newfoundland and Labrador, Kerry Galusha of Yukon/Northwest Territories and Nova Scotias Heather Smith-Dacey of Nova were in danger of falling out of playoff contention at 2-5. The top four teams at the conclusion of the playoff round Thursday advance to playoffs. Seven wins is usually enough to get into a tiebreaker game, if not a playoff spot. For Larouche, a finalist when the Scotties Tournament of Hearts was last held in Red Deer in 2004, winning twice and pulling out a dramatic win against the defending champions provided a psychological lift for her team. "For sure in an extra end like that, to come back, its good for us and maybe great for our confidence," the Quebec skip said. Still not entirely pleased with her technique, Larouche was out on the ice taking more practice throws late at night. Hollands team was halfway through a gruelling schedule of four games in four draws. The Jones team from Winnipeg completed their four-in-four and won three games. Jones edged 8-7 in an extra end Tuesday afternoon. "The four-game stretch is always a long kind of grind, so were just happy to be done and were happy with the two wins today," Jones said. B.C. second Sasha Carter is four months pregnant and was still feeling the effects of a stomach ailment making the rounds at the tournament. After losing 7-4 to Alberta earlier, Scotts Kelowna team scored four points in the ninth end to finish off Newfoundland 11-7. "Under the circumstances, thank god it didnt go down to the wire even," Scott said. "The first five (ends) were really rough for Sash and the last five she played lights out." In another evening game, Ontarios Horgan thrashed Yukon/Northwest Territories 12-2. Galusha did not play at all Tuesday because of that stomach bug. Hollands alternate Jolene Campbell was pressed into service both Tuesday afternoon and the previous night when Schneiders knee buckled. The alternates job on a curling team is mostly unglamorous, fetching and carrying equipment for teammates and practising late at night when everyone else is back at the hotel. Alternates and coaches watch games from a raised table at the end of the ice. But like a backup goaltender in hockey, the "fifth" as they are called, must be ready to step cold from the fringe of the game into action when a regular in the lineup cant play. "You really have to be ready to play," Campbell said. "I have to make sure Im getting the right rest and eating the right things and preparing just like the girls are. "Sitting on those bar stools all day doesnt really prepare you to play. Mentally thats the hardest thing about being a fifth player. You have to be ready to go all the time. On the side, you have a lot of other duties and things you are trying to do to make sure the girls just get to focus on the ice." Schneiders situation is an example of how important it is when choosing an alternate for a national championship. Campbell skips her own team in Saskatchewan, but is also Hollands alternate at a third straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She served in the same capacity at last years world championship, in which Holland won the silver medal. Campbell, 30, delves into other positions in league play and joins Holland for a few games during the season to ensure a seamless transition when a situation arises like it has in Red Deer. "It was nothing we really planned for, but we definitely had the discussions before coming that if that ever happened, we felt comfortable with Jolene and Jolene can play every position," Holland said. "We had those discussions so everybody is comfortable knowing if youre not quite 100 per cent and youre not going to be 100 per cent on the ice, that Jolene can come out and perform." ' ' '
