ANAHEIM, Calif. Ryan Braun . -- The prince of Mexican boxing is ready for his coronation, and only the kid brother of a famous English brawler stands in his way. Saul Alvarezs career has been on a skyward trajectory since his early teens, and the hard-hitting 20-year-old can make championship history even more quickly than he imagined Saturday night. The redheaded, freckle-faced slugger ubiquitously known as "Canelo" -- the Spanish word for cinnamon -- will fight for the vacant WBC super welterweight belt against Matthew Hatton (41-4-2, 16 KOs), the less heralded brother of former 140-pound champion Ricky Hatton, at Anaheims Honda Center. "I didnt expect it to happen this quickly, but Ive been preparing for this for a long time," said Alvarez, who turned pro at 15. "Im grateful for the opportunity, but I know I still have to earn it." Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KOs) nearly missed the opportunity to become the youngest fighter to win the 154-pound title when he came in nearly two pounds over the fights 150-pound catch weight limit on Friday. Given two hours to lose the weight, the sculpted fighter could only shave off less than half a pound. Hatton, who made the catch weight, agreed to stay in the fight despite Alvarezs mistake. The fighters managers agreed to an undisclosed financial penalty, which could mean Alvarez wont earn a whole lot more than a belt if he wins. Thats more than enough motivation. Given the power in his fists and the expectations heaped upon him by Golden Boy Promotions and the Mexican public, both Alvarez and Hatton realize Canelo is expected to seize his apparent destiny with ease. Hatton has few major accomplishments beyond his European welterweight title. Hell likely be the toughest opponent of Alvarezs relatively short career, but not many people outside the Hatton family think hell be tough enough to take the belt back to Manchester. "Hes never fought anyone as good as me, anyone as fit and determined as me," Hatton said. "I was highly motivated for the fight in the first place, but to get to fight for the world title motivates me even more. Ill leave nothing in the locker room." The WBC fell all over itself to add a big, ugly belt to the virtual crown Alvarez already wears in Mexico, where his cowboy image and beauty-queen girlfriend make him the biggest name in the fight-crazy countrys younger generation of boxers. Just last week, the Mexico City-based sanctioning body abruptly ruled the winner of this fight would fill its 154-pound title vacated by Manny Pacquiao -- even though the fight is at a catch weight, and even though Hatton has never fought at super welterweight. "This is a huge stage for Canelo, the biggest challenge he has ever faced," promoter Oscar De La Hoya said. "We all think hes ready for the challenges of this fight and everything that lies beyond it. I really believe hes the next big thing in this sport. Hell be bigger than me." Mexican brawler Daniel Ponce De Leon also meets Cincinnatis unbeaten Adrien Broner on Alvarezs first headlining HBO show, while 168-pound contender Daniel Jacobs and formerly incarcerated middleweight James Kirkland also are on a card expected to attract a vocal pro-Alvarez crowd to the Anaheim Ducks home arena. A villains role is something novel for Hatton, who often fought in front of sympathetic crowds on the undercard of his brothers bouts. Ricky Hattons career peaked with big-money knockout losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao, sending him into an effective retirement, but setting him up for life. Many see Saturdays fight in similar terms -- Matthew will get his biggest payday, but hell go down hard. Ricky isnt among them. "Hell never take a backwards step," Ricky Hatton said. "I was worried about him moving up in weight, but after seeing him in the gym, Im not worried any more. As my brother, Im proud to say hes made of the same material. We didnt come here for a payday. We came here to take home a belt." The brothers still get along famously and work together, with a promotions company and a website, but Matthew has never been his brothers twin. For starters, Matthew supports Manchester United, while Ricky and most of their family prominently support Manchester City. "Im more professional now," Hatton said. "I also used to put on a bunch of weight between fights, like Ricky. Im not going to say I still dont like a pint, but when youre a sportsman, when its your job, youre supposed to stay in shape. Ive learned from some of both our mistakes." Hatton is eating ostrich and kangaroo meat during his training, keeping to an improved training regimen that helped him win his European title last year. He also worked on a game plan to minimize the physical disadvantages he faces against Alvarez, a natural super welterweight who looks taller than his listed one-inch advantage over Hatton, a longtime welterweight. Hatton is aware of the long odds against him, but the 29-year-old has waited a whole lot longer than Canelo for his title shot. "Im sure hell go on to do great things in his career," Hatton said. "Just not in this fight." Rau... The Jets have now won three straight games at home, three of their last four overall and for only the second time this season they have won back-to-back games. The Sharks meanwhile are 0-1-4 in their last five. Dan Boyle opened the scoring for San Jose on a power play and, despite having been outshot 10-3 at that point, the Sharks were up 1-0. Just 1:14 after that goal, Sharks centre Tomas Hertl broke in alone, scored his rookie leading 10th of the year and the first period ended 2-0 despite the Jets outshooting San Jose 15-9. At the 6:12 mark of the second period, Michael Frolik got the Jets on the board on a great pass from Matt Halischuk. It was Froliks fourth goal of the season, one more than he scored last year in the shortened season. That goal started a scoring spree as Tommy Wingels restored San Joses two goal lead 41 seconds later. With the goal, Wingels extended his point streak to six games. But, Dustin Byfuglien made it three goals in just 2:26 when he scored his first of the year to get the Jets back to within one. It has been an interesting few days for Chris Thorburn. Friday when it was announced that Byfuglien had scored his first, Thorburn was credited with his first point of the year. But when the goal was changed to Eric Tangradi, Thorburn lost his assist. Tonight, Thorburn was initially given an assist on Byfugliensgoal, but after video review, the assist was changed to, you guessed it, Tangradi. Before the second period came to an end, Grant Clitsome also scored his second of the year to tie the game. Clitsome had two assists to go along with his goal for his second career three point game. There was plenty of energy in the MTS Centre for this one, as the shots after two periods were 32-21 in favour of the Jets. Nothing seems to come easy to the Jets though as Byfuglien was given a delay of game penalty at the buzzer for shooting the puck over the glass with a couple seconds left. The Jets killed that penalty, but could not kill a tripping call on Halischuk and again found themselves behind. The Jets were short-handed three timmes in the third, with the power plays at the end of the night favouring San Jose six to two. The Sharks lead the NHL in power play chances while the Jets are second in the NHL in total short-handed situations. With the period winding down, and Ondrej Pavelec starting to make his way out of the net, Bryan Little found Andrew Ladd in the slot and his quick release found the back of the net to tie the game at four. It was Ladds fifth goal of the season. The final shots after regulation and overtime were 46-34, with both goalies being forced to make big saves. Ladd put one off the post in overtime, before being the only player to score in the three-round shootout to earn the Jets their eighth win of the year. The Jets are now 6-5-1 at home. It was Ladds fourth shootout goal of the season and fifth career shootout winner, second this year. In his career, Ladd is now 10 for 20. Patrick Marleau did score in overtime but the goal was called back as the officials ruled Wingels had interfered with Pavelec. There was no penalty on the play, but the goal was disallowed. The Jets are now 3-1 in the shootout and are a perfect six for six over the last two shootouts, Pavelec replied a quick "no" on the TSN Jets post-game show about perhaps liking that part of the game a little bit more. With the two assists, Little now has five goals and nine points in the last seven games, Ladd now has 12 points in 13 career games against San Jose and has two goals and eight points in his last six games. The Jets will play in Detroit Tuesday (TSN, TSN 1290), then at home against Philadelphia Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). It is the second meeting of the season with the Red Wings after a 4-2 win for the Jets last Monday. Jets coach Claude Noel had reason to smile after this one. "The outcome was great, we played a strong game. We battled back, didnt lose our focus or our hope. Never got rattled, where a week or two back we might have. Its a huge building block in a lot of different ways. We played with some heart, some passion. I really enjoyed the game," He said. The Jets played their style for the win. "We were good on the fore-check and put pucks to the net," continued Noel. "They dont give you much. We played hard." On Ladds game, "he has a sneaky wrist shot and his will to win is infectious."
