TORONTO -- Two weeks after a devastating loss to Sporting Kansas City, the memories were still painful for Toronto FC. Kansas City won 1-0 on a Kei Kamara free kick in the 83rd minute that was deflected at the wall before going in off the fingers of goalkeeper Milos Kocic. "The last Kansas game left a sour taste in our mouth," said Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield. "For sure, I think that was a nil-niller all day. Someone leaves the wall and all of a sudden they score on a deflected free kick and you get beat 1-0 at home. That was tough to swallow." The Reds (5-15-6) will have a chance at redemption today at Livestrong Sporting Park when they play Kansas City for the third time in this Major League Soccer season. Kansas City won 2-0 at home on June 16 in TFCs first match under Paul Mariner after he took over as head coach from Aron Winter. Kansas City (14-7-5) will be without speedy forward Teal Bunbury who had season-ending knee surgery and defender Aurelien Collin who is suspended for the game. "Theyve got massive depth," TFC defender Richard Eckersley said. "Whoever steps in is going to be a threat. Were not going to have a day off by any means. Weve just got to be on our game and on our front foot constantly." Toronto forward Eric Hassli has a rib injury and wont play Saturday. The injury forced him from the 3-1 loss to Santos Laguna of Mexico in a CONCACAF Champions League match at BMO Field on Tuesday. That was another disappointing result for Toronto. The Reds had tied the game in the 68th minute on a goal by Quincy Amarikwa and they felt they played well enough for a draw. But a familiar theme for their season played out when Santos scored in the 90th and 92nd minutes. "Over the past month weve been getting real close without getting past the finish line, seeing the games off," Dunfield said. "I think 1-1 was probably a fair result the other night. I dont think it was a 3-1 game. "I think its lots of little mistakes that are leading to goals right now. Were making poor decisions, especially when it counts in the last five minutes. In general were making naive mistakes maybe. Mistakes that shouldnt be made when youve put in 85 minutes of hard work). It seems like we cant get away with anything, we really are being punished." Dunfield feels there have been positives. "Were keeping the ball better now, were creating chances and I always feel weve got a goal in us," he said. Toronto worked on ironing out the kinks during Thursdays session at Downsview Park. "Possession, out of possession, in possession," Mariner said. "Determination to get it back. Tempo. If in doubt get it out, its such an old adage. "When you watch Brazil, Argentina, Barcelona, all the great teams, all the highlight reels show the attacking play. You never see them when theyre under real pressure, they just put it up the field. Theres no shame in that, its just a way of winning football matches or keeping yourself in football matches." Notes: Dunfield and defender Ashtone Morgan have will play for Canada in World Cup qualifying matches against Panama Sept. 7-11. ...After Saturdays game, centre back Darren ODay will join the Republic of Ireland for a World Cup qualifier at Kazakhstan on Sept. 7 but will be miss Irelands next game, a friendly, so that he can play in Torontos game against Chicago at BMO Field on Sept. 12. ... Hassli picked up the rib injury in the 2-1 loss at Columbus on Aug. 22. He also had back spasms, which cleared up but the rib injury persisted. ....TFC defender Jeremy Hall was at Rogers Centre Thursday to renew acquaintances with Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez. After surviving three tough innings, Richard not only settled down on the mound but drove in three runs to help the San Diego Padres rally for a 9-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Richard (5-7) trailed 4-0 in the third inning after allowing two home runs before he got into a groove -- on the mound and at the plate. The left-hander, a native of Indiana and a former quarterback at the University of Michigan, considers himself a good athlete and it showed with a key two-run double in the Padres five-run fourth inning that put them ahead to stay at 7-4. "He played a complete baseball game," San Diego manager Bud Black said. Richard, who came in with just one hit in 25 at-bats, added an RBI single in the fifth. "The first at-bat, I got a pitch I could handle and got a good swing," Richard said. "Im just trying to do what I can to help the team." Perhaps as big of a moment for Richard and the Padres came in the third inning when the Mariners took a 4-0 lead on Justin Smoaks sacrifice fly. Richard issued consecutive walks to load the bases with two outs before he got Dustin Ackley on a groundout. "That was outstanding, that was huge," said Black, who added Richard probably would have been lifted had he not retired Ackley. "That was a big moment in the game," Richard said. "To be able to keep the game within striking distance was huge." After the first three innings, Richard allowed one unearned run as he pitched into the seventh. Chase Headley drove in three runs, two on sacrifice flies, for San Diego. Franklin Gutierrez and Miguel Olivo homered for Seattle, which has allowed 39 runs on the first four games of its road trip. "Our starters have been struggling on the road and it makes it tough," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. Richard gave up five runs -- three earned -- and six hits in 6 2-3 innings. Richard struck out six and walked three as he won his third straight start, all in interleague play.dddddddddddd Huston Street got the final out with two runners on for his ninth save in as many chances. The Padres fell behind 4-0 before they rallied for two in the third and then sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth inning. Kevin Millwood (3-6) hit Yonder Alonso to lead off the inning. After Logan Forsythes infield single, Everth Cabrera doubled in one run. With one out, Richard lined a two-run double down the right-field line. Will Venable followed with a run-scoring single. After third baseman Kyle Seager committed his second error of the game on Cameron Maybins grounder, Venable and Maybin pulled off a double steal. Headley hit a sacrifice fly for the final run. "(Richard) did what he needed to," Millwood said. "The ball was up. If I got them to hit the ball on the ground, it found a hole. They did everything they needed to win the ballgame." Millwood allowed eight runs -- five earned -- and eight hits over five innings. The right-hander is 0-2 in his last five starts, including Seattles 1-0 combined no-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers June 8 when he received a no-decision. "The balls were up, breaking balls werent good," Millwood said. "I just didnt pitch good, bottom line." Gutierrez had four hits and Ichiro Suzuki finished with three for Seattle, which is 1-3 on the trip despite hitting seven home runs and scoring 28 runs. Notes: Richard has won his last five starts against the AL and is 4-1 against Seattle. ... The Mariners lost for just the seventh time in 22 games at Petco Park. . San Diego RHP Anthony Bass, who left in the fifth inning on Wednesday with shoulder inflammation, is still sore. The Padres are not sure if Bass will make his next start. The Padres already have five starters among seven pitchers on the DL. . Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez (4-5, 3.52) will face Padres RHP Jason Marquis (1-2, 1.86) in the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday night. ' ' '
