The Columbus Blue Jackets and Ottawa Senators struck a deal from positions of excess to address other lineup needs. Numbers Game examines the Nick Foligno-Marc Methot trade. The Blue Jackets Get: LW Nick Foligno. Foligno, 24, is coming off a breakthrough season in which he scored 15 goals and a career-high 47 points while accumulating a career-high 124 penalty minutes. Foligno, who played 14:39 per game, was one of three players (Kyle Wellwood and Viktor Stalberg were the others) to play fewer than 15 minutes per game and finish with more than 40 points on the season. Hes evolving as an agitator who may have enough skill to play in a top six role. In Columbus, Foligno figures to get more ice time, but hell be more responsible for creating offence because the Blue Jackets, as currently constructed, dont have the same kind of supporting cast. Foligno, who was earning $1.2-million against the cap last season, is currently a restricted free agent, so hes due for a raise, though it would make sense to not dive in long-term until he shows what he can do with Columbus. The Senators Get: D Marc Methot. Methot is a 27-year-old stay-at-home blueliner whose season was shortened when he suffered a fractured jaw in early February and finished a career-low minus-11 in just 46 games while logging a career-high 20:03 average time on ice. With the Senators losing Filip Kuba as a free agent today, there is a natural spot for Mathot to take on the Ottawa blueline. Paired with Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, Methot can focus on defensive responsibilities, allowing Karlsson to join the attack. Methot is under contract for three more seasons, at $3-million a pop, not an unreasonable price for a defenceman that can play 20-plus minutes per game. Given their depth up front, signing Guillaume Latendresse and with prospects like Jakob Silfverberg, Mika Zibanejad and Mark Stone on the way, its understandable that the Senators felt Foligno was expendable, particularly to address a need and Methot, an Ottawa native, should be better value over the next three years than Kuba. From the Blue Jackets perspective, they have invested enough in other blueliners (James Wisniewski, Jack Johnson, Fedor Tyutin and Nikita Nikitin) that Methot was likewise expendable and Columbus had better hope that Foligno can continue to grow offensively, with a 20-goal ceiling certainly not out of the question for what he might be able to contribute. Currently, it seems a deal in which both clubs are dealing from a position of relative strength, meeting each others needs. Given the ease with which teams tend to find wingers, as opposed to steady defencemen, there may be a slight edge for the Sens in this swap. The first was that LaPolice was hired to fix the offense and that had not happened, and secondly, that the GM was tired of the undisciplined penalties. Now, there are always two sides to every story and you can easily make an argument that supports the two reasons, or refutes them. LONDON -- With the experience of playing in London still fresh in his mind, Tom Brady has been focusing on some special preparations for his return to the British capital. The New England Patriots (4-3) will play a regular-season game in London for the second time in four years on Sunday when they face the St. Louis Rams (3-4) at Wembley Stadium, the iconic venue that is the home of Englands national soccer team. "It was loud last time," Brady said Friday, remembering back to 2009 when the Patriots beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 in the NFLs annual trip across the pond. "You never really know when theyre going to be cheering, so you got to prepare for both without crowd noise and with crowd noise." A sellout crowd of more than 80,000 is expected for the sixth NFL regular-season game at Wembley. The Patriots arrived in London on Friday morning, three days after the Rams made their way over to Britain. Although they did not schedule a practice session for Friday afternoon, coach Bill Belichick said the team still had a lot of work to do. "Well get done what we feel like we can get done," Belichick said. "Today is kind of a transition day for us. "Normally its the middle of the night for us. But its not, its early in the morning. So try to spend the day as the day and then sleep the night and hopefully tomorrow our body clocks will be back on normal schedule." New Englands three losses this season have been by a combined four points, but two of them came against NFC West opponents -- the same division the Rams play in. Last week, the Patriots beat the visiting New York Jets 29-26 in overtime. For Brady, the key this weekend will be trying to keep things as normal as possible. "The most important thing is using these next few days to prepare and not necessarily get distracted by all the different things that you could possibly go out and do," Brady said. "Its not like this is a vacation." Not only is this a work trip, its an iimportant one.dddddddddddd "You look at this game as a very critical point in our season. If we can just get to 5-3, we feel like were at a decent point," Brady said, looking ahead to next weeks bye. "You can move forward with mental toughness and play Patriot football." Belichick is also all about the work at hand. When asked by local media about footballs impact overseas, the Patriots coach was less than eager to get involved in the discussion, saying "I have no idea." A few minutes later, he was asked about racism in soccer, which has been a hot topic in Britain over the last year with several high-profile cases. "I dont know anything about the soccer league here," Belichick said in his usual monotone voice. How about having a full-time NFL franchise based in London? "Yeah, Im not really sure," Belichick said. "Im just trying to coach a team that Im on. And I dont really know about all the rest of it." But if you want to talk football -- or American football, at least -- youll get plenty about Sundays game, even if its not exactly incisive. "The Rams present a lot of issues. Theyre very good defensively, fast, good pass rush team, good coverage team, got a lot of good corners," Belichick said. "Offensively, running backs are very talented ... they got explosive receivers, good kicking game, good punter, good kicker, good returner. Theyre good in every area of the game." This weekends NFL game will be the first in London since the city hosted the 2012 Olympics. Wembley Stadium was used for some soccer matches, including the mens and womens gold-medal games, while the adjacent Wembley Arena hosted badminton and rhythmic gymnastics. Brady said he watched the London Games on TV, but he was somewhat stumped when asked what Olympic sport would suit him best. "Im not the most athletic person in the world," Brady said, "but I got a decent arm so it works for me as an NFL quarterback." ' ' '
