DETROIT -- Alex Avilas groundball rolled between first and second, and for a moment it looked as if his nightmarish day might have a happier finish. Then Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis ranged well to his left, made the stop and tossed to pitcher Vinnie Pestano covering first. "I was running like heck with my head down so I couldnt really tell," Avila said. "When I looked up, going at the bag, I saw Pestano covering and he made a good play." Avilas groundout ended Detroits 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians and knocked the Tigers a half-game back of Chicago in the AL Central. The White Sox were playing later Monday. Asdrubal Cabreras tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning put Cleveland ahead and gave right-hander Corey Kluber his first career victory. "Its nice to get the first one out of the way," Kluber said. "Took a little while -- longer than I would have liked -- but yeah, its a great feeling." Detroit entered the day tied for first in the AL Central. The game was tied at 2 in the seventh when reliever Darin Downs (1-1) allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. Cabrera then lifted a fly to centre off Brayan Villarreal. The 26-year-old Kluber (1-3) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings in his seventh career start. He struck out four and walked one. Pestano allowed two baserunners in the ninth but escaped for his second save. Prince Fielder doubled but was unable to move to third on Delmon Youngs tapper. Brennan Boesch was hit by a pitch, but he and Fielder were stranded when Jhonny Peralta struck out and Avila hit his grounder that nearly made it through but was foiled by Kipnis and Pestano. "Thats one that people think gets monotonous in spring training because you work on that every single day," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "But it takes repetition to get it done right, and Jason Kipnis deserves a lot of credit. That was a tremendous play." Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez allowed two unearned runs in six innings. The Tigers were coming off a three-game sweep of Chicago that pulled them even with the White Sox atop the division. They were sloppy early on in this one, allowing unearned runs in the first and third. Avilas two-out passed ball allowed Cleveland to open the scoring, and a throwing error by Avila put a man on third two innings later. Detroit brought the infield in, and Cabrera singled up the middle. The Tigers scored in the first on a single by Young and in the fourth on a single by Peralta. With men on first and second and nobody out in the fourth, Avila hit into a double play, enabling Kluber to limit the damage. "Hes struggling. Thats putting it mildly," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Hes hitting extra. ... Had extra hitting yesterday and got some more swings to try and get things worked out." Kluber pitched briefly for the Indians last year and was knocked around in his first three starts of 2012. But in his last four, hes allowed six earned runs in 22 innings, striking out 19 and walking six. Cody Allen pitched the seventh for Cleveland, and Esmil Rogers worked the eighth. Detroits Andy Dirks hit a deep fly to centre in the eighth that was caught, and third baseman Brent Lillibridge made a diving stop on Miguel Cabreras grounder. NOTES: Downs had pitched only 15 2-3 innings in his career before this game, although he came in with a 1.72 ERA. ... He wouldnt mind kick-starting his summer with a victory in early May, either. Funk shot a 3-under 69 in sweltering heat Saturday for a share of the second-round lead with Tom Lehman in the Insperity Championship. "Im playing really good. Im really pleased with where I am," Funk said. "Im doing all the stuff I need to do. Im really excited about where I am, regardless of what happens (Sunday), with all the big stuff coming up." Lehman followed his opening 65 with a 70 to match Funk at 9-under 135 on The Tournament Course at The Woodlands. Funk is seeking his first Champions Tour win since the 2010 Tradition and he can tack on a unique distinction along with it. Funk won the 1992 Houston Open on this course, and he can become the first player to win a regular tour event and a Champions Tour title at the same place since Tom Watson won the 1980 British Open and the 2007 Senior British Open at Muirfield. Funk has only one top-10 finish in five Champions Tour starts this year. He also has missed the cuts in two of four starts on the regular tour. "Its fun to be back in contention and be in the mix," Funk said. "I just want to be in the mix." Lehman and Funk played together Saturday and were never separated by more than one shot on the leaderboard. Lehman made three bogeys on his back nine, but moved back to 9 under with a birdie on No. 17. "You have birdie holes out here, but theres a lot of good holes, too, where you can get in trouble," Lehman said. Mike Goodes and Brad Bryant were one shot back. Goodes had a 67, and Brad Bryant shot a 68. Goodes made four straight birdies on the back nine. He was 10-under par heading into the last hole, but he dunked his 7-iron approach in the water andd took a double bogey.dddddddddddd The 55-year-old Goodes is seeking his first victory since 2009. "Every tournament is a major to me," Goodes said. Bryant made six birdies and two bogeys on his round. The 57-year-old Bryant hasnt won since 2007. "Id rather be leading by 12, but thats OK," Bryant said. "I think its fun for the gallery when you have that many guys in the hunt. Were fan-friendly, we want to keep the scores close together for the fans." Michael Allen, going for his third straight victory, had a 68 to join Bobby Clampett (67) at 7 under. Allen shot his eighth consecutive sub-70 score this year. Two years ago, Fred Couples shot a final-round 63 to win the event at 17-under par. And Funk and Lehman are both expecting a shootout Sunday. Thats why its a funny course to play," Lehman said. "It gives you opportunities, but you have to take advantage of them. There is always going to be somebody 4 or 5 or 6 under. Somebodys going to do it, you just hope its you." J.L. Lewis had a hole-in-one on the 189-yard par-3 16th hole, the first ace in the tournaments history. The main attraction Saturday was the grouping of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player in an exhibition scramble. Palmer curled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole, prompting a roar from the massive gallery that followed the greats all day. The team of Nicklaus, Palmer and Player won the three-team event at 11 under. Goodes finished in time to join the crowd and get a glimpse of the greats. He never played on the regular tour, keeping his amateur status until turning pro in 2007. "Im just a typical fan," Goodes said. "Theyre my idols, theyve been my idols since I was a little bitty kid. I just wish I was, in a way, 10 years older where I couldve played in a couple of tournaments with them." ' ' '
