KIEV, Ukraine -- Irelands cheerful legions of singing fans have won a UEFA prize after winning millions of admirers at the European Championship. UEFA says its president Michel Platini will visit Ireland soon to present an award to thank the "absolutely fantastic" fans. UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said, "everyone was very impressed with the fans of the Irish national team." The Irish fans singing of "The Fields of Athenry" filled stadiums in Poznan and Gdansk with emotion despite the team being mostly outclassed in losing to Croatia, Spain and Italy. "The Fields of Athenry" is a folk song set during the 19th century Irish Famine about a fictional man from near Athenry in County Galway sentenced to be transported to Australia for stealing food for his starving family. Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said Irelands fans "should be applauded." Buffon said: "They are people full of pride and happiness who accept defeat and victory in the same manner." MILAN, Italy -- Inter Milan beat Serie B side Hellas Verona 2-0 to advance to the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday. Antonio Cassano put Inter ahead in the 50th after taking a pass from Fredy Guarin. Four minutes later, Guarin scored with a free kick that deflected in off Veronas wall at the San Siro. Inter played the final 10 minutes with 10 men after goalkeeper Luca Castellaazzi was carried off on a stretcher with an injury, as the home side had used all three of its substitutions.ddddddddddddForward Rodrigo Palacio ended the match in goal, and performed admirably by saving a header. Inter will next face either Napoli or Bologna, who play Wednesday. Fans clashed outside the stadium before the match and had to be separated by police. ' ' '
