The race divided early on, with the first break forming early in the race, building a lead of more than five minutes before arriving at the start of the Box Hill circuit, the only major climbs on the entire route. "It was up-down, up-down, too many people," said Vinokurov. "It was very dangerous. I knew if I followed the group, I would have no chance in the sprint." As the race continued to circle on the nine laps of the Box Hill section more riders joined the break, including Alejandro Valverde of Spain and Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland. With well over 20 riders in the break and a diminished peloton, the gap settled at just under one minute. Great Britain sprinter Mark Cavendish and his teammates had controlled the peloton for the whole race, but missed their opportunity, failing to completely pull in the lead group when Valverde and Cancellara went ahead. It was a responsibility with which few countries were willing to help. Bernhard Eisel of Austria was aiding the Britons - his teammates during the professional season - and the Germans offered some help. However most of the work was being done by the five Britons. But the effort appeared to be too much, with Christopher Froome , then David Millar and even Bradley Wiggins all dropping back from the front of the peloton, their energy spent. Cavendish and Ian Stannard , along with the Germans, were left at the front of the peloton to watch the lead group stay ahead, and their medal ambitions fade. The result, which many regarded as playing to British strengths, is a significant failure for a team that had planned to kick off their home Olympic Games with a gold medal. One less defensive lineman in camp could mean more reps for the six-foot-five, 318-pound Hicks, who transferred to Regina after becoming involved in a recruiting scandal at LSU and missing the entire 2009 season.
