ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ivan Rodriguez is going back to Texas to retire. The 14-time All-Star catcher who won a record 13 Gold Gloves will formally announce his retirement as an active player Monday at Rangers Ballpark, the home of his original team. He will also be honoured by the Texas Rangers before their game that night against the New York Yankees, one of the five teams he played for after Texas. Rodriguez, now 40, and the Rangers announced the plans Thursday, a day after the news was reported by several outlets. A fan favourite known as Pudge, Rodriguez was only 19 when he made his major league debut with Texas on June 20, 1991. He played the first 12 of his 21 major league seasons with Texas, and returned to the Rangers briefly in 2009. Rodriguez caught a major league-record 2,427 games, and hit .296 with 311 home runs and 1,332 RBIs in 2,543 games overall with Texas (1991-2002, 2009), Florida (2003), Detroit (2004-08), the Yankees (2008), Houston (2009), and Washington (2010-11). When the Rangers won their third AL West title in a four-year span in 1999, Rodriguez hit .332 with 35 home runs and 113 RBIs and was the American League MVP. The two-time defending American League champion Rangers never played in the World Series when Rodriguez was there. He left Texas as a free agent after the 2002 season before signing with Florida. Rodriguez did get to play in two World Series, in 2003 with the champion Marlins and in 2006 with the Tigers. wholesale nfl jerseys . ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jonny Gomes had an outstanding homecoming. Gomes hit a towering homer, Mike Leake pitched six strong innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-0 on Monday night. Gomes, the former Rays outfielder playing at Tropicana Field for the first time since becoming a free agent after the 2008 season, hit a solo shot off an overhanging catwalk during a two-run fourth that made it 4-0. Brandon Phillips, who had four hits and two RBIs, added a run-scoring single off Jeremy Hellickson (7-7) later in the inning. "I really wanted to play him here against his former team," Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Gomes. "It was a good night for him and hopefully hell hit a couple more before we get out of here." Gomes has hit nine fair balls off the catwalks, the most at the St. Petersburg ballpark since it opened in 1998. Many in the announced crowd of 19,891 cheered for Gomes, a popular figure when he played for Tampa Bay from 2003-08, after his home run. "It was a good opportunity to show the Reds the guidelines on the catwalk," Gomes said with a smile. "I havent been here for a while, so I saw some familiar faces. A good opportunity to come back to the Trop." Leake (7-4) scattered four hits, walked two and had three strikeouts in ending his two-start losing streak. "I felt good, but I kind of took a little step back as far as mechanics," Leake said. "I was a little disappointed on my first-pitch strikes. But putting up zeros, you cant complain." Sam LeCure worked two innings before Nick Masset pitched the ninth to complete the six-hitter. "Our pitching is coming around big-time," Baker said. Hellickson lost his fourth consecutive start, giving up four runs and eight hits in six innings. Duriing the right-handers skid, Tampa Bay has been outscored 20-1.dddddddddddd The Rays were coming off a three-game sweep at Houston, where they scored 26 runs. Tampa Bay (44-35) dropped to 18-19 at home, where it has scored just 114 runs in 37 games. "That was a bad game," manager Joe Maddon said. "We just arent, offensively, playing the same game here. The answer, I dont know what it is. I honestly dont." Cincinnati went up 2-0 in the first when Phillips drove in a run with a double and Jay Bruce hit an RBI single. The Reds had lost six of nine. Bruce, who missed Sundays game with flulike symptoms, was back in the lineup and went 1-for-4. Tampa Bay ran itself out of a promising inning in the sixth. With two on and no outs, Matt Joyce hit a flyball to left that turned into double play when Evan Longoria, the baserunner at first, ran past the lead runner, Ben Zobrist, for an automatic out. Casey Kotchman then hit an inning-ending grounder. "He doesnt make too many mistakes, but that was a little gift for me," Leake said. Longoria thought left-fielder Fred Lewis was not going to run the ball down. "I was convinced it was going to get down," Longoria said. "He tracked it down and we all know what happened."
