SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Vivek Ranadive has made a fortune in the software industry by betting on the right people. The new owner of the Sacramento Kings is now betting big on DeMarcus Cousins. The Kings signed Cousins to a four-year maximum contract extension worth a reported $62 million Monday, saying the 23-year-old centre is the foundation the franchise will build on to lead a struggling team into a new era. Sacramento hasnt had a winning season since 2006, but the new Kings management is comfortable investing in a player considered one of the NBAs best young big men but who also has drawn multiple suspensions from both the team and the league for his behaviour. "From my perspective, it isnt really that much of a leap of faith," said Ranadive, whose purchase of the team from the Maloof family was approved by the NBA in May. "Im just doing what I do in my business every day, just betting on the best. And he represents the best." The fifth overall selection of the 2010 NBA draft, Cousins led the Kings last season with averages of 17.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals and also averaged 2.7 assists. He ranked ninth among the leagues leading rebounders. But the Kings once again finished among the worst teams in the Western Conference at 28-54, Sacramentos fifth consecutive season with fewer than 30 victories, and Cousins was reprimanded several times for his conduct. The 6-foot-11 veteran said those problems are behind him and he accepts the accountability that comes with his lucrative new deal. "Ive got big shoulders, so I can handle that," Cousins said. "I consider myself a leader on this team, so I take all the responsibility that comes with it. Ive had pressure from the beginning, so I dont have a problem with it. I was doing it in the beginning, so I definitely dont have a problem doing it now." Cousins tumultuous 2012-13 season was marked by several incidents during which his behaviour and discipline came into question. Cousins was suspended one game by the Kings on Dec. 22 for "unprofessional behaviour and conduct detrimental to the team" after an incident involving then-coach Keith Smart in the locker room during a loss at the Los Angeles Clippers. He was suspended by the NBA for one game without pay for striking O.J. Mayo in the groin during a loss at Dallas on Dec. 10. Following a loss at San Antonio on Nov. 9, the league suspended Cousins two games without pay for confronting Spurs announcer Sean Elliott in a "hostile manner." But Ranadive began his push to make Cousins a centerpiece of Sacramentos future as soon as he became owner. The Kings had until Oct. 31 to come to terms on an extension to prevent Cousins from becoming a restricted free agent next summer. "I consulted people way smarter than myself and there was never a doubt in my mind that he was going to be the foundation of this franchise moving forward," Ranadive said. "People have said a lot of things about DeMarcus, but hes a fine young man. I think of DeMarcus as really the prototypical, 21st century player. Hes one of the most talented big men in the business and has an understanding of the game that is truly unique." Cousins already is working on improving his image. He will donate $1 million from his new deal to "the families and community of Sacramento," he said. Cousins also will donate money to several organizations launched by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. "Thats something I have to get better at," Cousins said. "I mean, Im the type of guy, if I know you dont like me, Im not going to just be able to smile in your face and say everything is cool. But Im blessed to be in this situation, I believe in this organization and Im glad they gave me this chance to prove it to them and this team." The Kings will begin their first training camp under a new regime that includes coach Michael Malone and general manager Pete DAlessandro with their first practice Tuesday morning on the UC Santa Barbara campus. The team will train there for a week before it begins the preseason Oct. 7 against the Golden State Warriors. The signing of Cousins came hours before the Kings annual media day at the teams practice facility in Sacramento. With a new downtown arena set to open in 2016, and NBA great Shaquille ONeal now on board as a minority owner and new mentor for Cousins, Ranadive said Cousins new deal is the latest example of the teams recent progress. "Its a good day for the new-era Sacramento Kings," he said. "We always knew this is where we were heading, so we are exactly where we want to be. Now we head off to training camp, and weve tied a bow on this (deal) and were excited to move forward." cheap nfl jerseys . This time, they did it with offence. Coach Mike Shanahan begged to differ, saying he would stake his Super Bowl-winning reputation on Rex Grossman and John Beck. Five games into the season, Shanahan isnt backing down, even after Grossmans four-interception performance in Sundays 20-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Grossman was benched for Beck, who took over in the fourth quarter and led the Redskins only touchdown drive in his first regular season game since 2007. Now Shanahan must decide who starts next week against the Carolina Panthers as the Redskins (3-2), having been knocked out of first place in the NFC East, try to regain the momentum that made them one of the NFLs early season surprises. Shanahan said Monday he had yet to make up his mind and had solicited opinions from the coaching staff. An announcement will come when practice resumes Wednesday, making for a mini-version of the Rex-vs.-Becks duel that played out during the preseason. Whoever it is, the winner will not be lacking for the coachs public vote of confidence. "I believe in Rex, and I believe in John Beck," Shanahan said. "I told you that from Day One. Both guys, Im hoping, are going to be here for a long time. ... Ive been around quarterbacks in the National Football League for a long time, and I know these guys have got what it takes." Shanahan was his usual cagey self, trying his best not to drop any hints as to which way he was leaning. In Grossmans favour, the coach recalled a five-interception game by John Elway in 1985 and also noted: "We know a pretty good quarterback this year that threw four interceptions in a game," an obvious reference to the Eagles Michael Vick. But Shanahans most candid moment, one that could speak for coaches league-wide, came when he was asked how much Grossmans won-loss record would factor into the decision. "First of all, Im going to use facts whichever way I want to, based on what story I want to throw out there," he said, causing the reporters in the auditorium to erupt with laughter. The arguments for either quarterback revolve around the others deficiencies. Go with Beck because Grossman remains a turnover machine, with 18 giveaways in eight Redskins starts. Go with Grossman because Beck is a 30-year-old journeyman who couldnt beat out Grossman during training camp. Grossman did get the Redskins this far -- a winning record and a half-game out of first -- and a switch to Beck might costt a game or two while he finds his groove, assuming he has one.ddddddddddddOn the other hand, Beck might be the spark that keeps the season from slipping away. Grossmans quarterback rating has been on a slide since the 110.5 he posted in the season-opening win over the New York Giants. Since then, hes put up 74.9, 77.5, 48.5 and then the paltry 23.7 on Sunday. His 66.5 overall rating ranks 32nd of 33 quarterbacks in the league, with only Kerry Collins (65.9) trailing him. One person firmly in Grossmans camp is Santana Moss. Asked if Grossman should keep the job, the veteran receiver and offensive team captain said: "No question. Thats not even something that should be asked." "I just feel like as an offence, what weve been doing so far this year, Rex has held it down," Moss said. "You just cant give up on him after one game." Moss, though, doesnt get a vote. "First of all, you want your players to support ALL your players -- regardless, 1st, 2nd, 3rd-teamers," Moss said. "But were going to do what we think is best." Shanahan and Moss both pointed out that not all interceptions are the quarterbacks fault. While there might be some blame to share for one or two of Grossmans on Sunday, the most egregious was No. 4. By then, he had already thrown three and should have been ball-conscious to the extreme, yet he scrambled to his left and let it fly along the sideline on the premise that receiver Jabar Gaffney might come back for the ball. Gaffney didnt; safety Kurt Coleman did. Beck took over on the next possession and looked understandably rusty, but he led a late touchdown drive that made the final score respectable. He completed 8 of 15 passes for 117 yards. Whoever starts will have his work cut out for him. The Redskins lost left guard Kory Lichtensteiger for the season with torn knee ligaments and will likely be without left tackle Trent Williams (sprained right ankle) for at least two weeks. Tight end Chris Cooley might be done for the season after breaking his left index finger; hes already fighting a sore knee. Staying upright could be a challenge behind a shuffled line that could have different starters at four of five positions. Thats where the more mobile Beck could have the edge as Shanahan mulls the options. "Things that Rex had did with those interceptions and whatnot, guys were kind of down," right tackle Jammal Brown said. "Not saying it was his fault, but anytime youre on a drive and you turn the ball over, it kind of takes the air out of you. So when John came in running around, doing what he does, it felt real good." cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
