Demonte Harpers pull-up three-pointer with four seconds left put Morehead State up for good, while the Cardinals failed to make a desperation shot with time running out to give Morehead State its first win over Louisville since 1957. During the media timeout, coach said, I dreamt about this last night, this exact position we would be in this situation, Harper said of his shot. He said, I know exactly where Im going to, Im going to put it right in your hands, Demonte. I dont want you to drive it to the hole, I want you to pull up and win the game off a three-pointer. Terrance Hill had a career-high 23 points with eight rebounds, while Ty Proffitt finished with 13 points for the Eagles (25-9), who had lost to Louisville in the round of 64 in the 2009 NCAA tourney. The Cardinals had some time to work with to steal the victory, but during the questionable play, Mike Marra stumbled just before getting a three-point shot off. Faried played stingy defense and blocked the attempt to secure the win. I mean, you cant really expect the ref to make a call, Marra said. Faried played good defense. Im not really mad about the call. It is what it is. Morehead State started hot, jumping out to a 15-2 lead, as Louisville didnt score for the first six-plus minutes. However, the Eagles cooled down, allowing Louisville to edge its way back into the game -- though it took the Cardinals nearly the entire half to claim their first lead. Justice and Smith buried back-to-back three-pointers to pull Louisville within 27-26 with 3:33 left in the half. A minute later, Proffitt responded with a trey. The Cardinals scored the next seven points, though, and took a 33-30 edge when Kyle Kuric buried a trey from the corner. But in true March Madness form, Hill sank a long-distance three-pointer with time running out to knot the game at the half. We saw this with the NFL lockout early on and well see it again in a few weeks. Some teams will open your eyes right out of the gate because theyre better than expected and others will disappoint. A big factor will be which teams are in shape and healthy, which in large part is based upon who paid the price in the off-season. In time, as weve seen in the NFL, the better teams eventually get it together and the cream rises to the top over the long haul but Im fully expecting some surprises early on. 3. UNC TAR HEELS: Watched their upset loss at UNLV on Saturday night. Did I expect Roy Williams loaded squad to go undefeated? No. Theyll be fine over the course of the season. Ill say this though, they love to play a fast-paced game and have tons of offensive weapons but they seem to be offensively focused right now and the defensive intensity isnt there yet. This is a championship contender but to be that, they need to guard. The front line of Barnes, Zeller and Henson is the best in NCAA basketball yet with that much size in the world of small ball, sometimes theyre going to have difficult matchups to deal with. The ability to figure out how to defend onn the perimeter and defend the 3-ball will be critical for this squad.dddddddddddd 4. NCAA SCANDALS: First Penn State and now Syracuse. The allegations are both disturbing and shocking to hear. Were all sickened by it and Im personally shaking my head in disbelief of how this stuff could go on. Sad for the alleged victims. I said this when I was coaching and Ill say it again, the NCAA has turned a blind eye to lots that go on at the respective universities and some universities protect whats good for them. Im a big believer that there should be an independent organization that is funded by the enormous dollars that come from the NCAA tournament contract and the bowl games and it would have a simple task. I would have a retired/experienced law enforcement person assigned to each Division 1 campus to oversee that the integrity of issues like sexual abuse, gambling, drug and alcohol abuse and contact of student-athletes with unsavory types is monitored. Im not saying that all issues would be caught but if you have someone with great instincts keeping an eye out for things that dont have an interest in the university or NCAA-biased slant, youve got a better chance to catch, prevent and correct some issues. Just a thought, the dollars are there (belive me they waste their fair share) to pay someone approx $50-70K to keep an eye out for things makes a bit of sense to me. I think it would have an impact in a positive way and keep everyone on their toes. 5. NBA PLAYERS IN CHINA: Lots of chatter out of China the past few days that NBA players that signed deals over there want to break their contracts and come back to the NBA. Bottom line: the players knew that they were signing a deal that would prohibit them from coming back for a year. Honour your contract. Id be very disappointed if the Chinese Basketball Federation, FIBA or the NBA allowed these guys to return before they honour their deals.
