ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves knocked around Cole Hamels in the opener, then chased Roy Halladay in the fourth inning on Wednesday night. . They have six homers through two games against the Philadelphia Phillies. Jason Heyward just loves what he is seeing so far. "Jumping out early is huge," he said. "Its not always going to happen, but its nice to do and nice to give your pitcher that cushion." Heyward, Justin Upton and rookie Evan Gattis homered, leading Paul Maholm and the Braves to a 9-2 victory over the Phillies. Freddie Freeman had three RBIs and leadoff hitter Andrelton Simmons scored twice for Atlanta, which jumped in front for the second straight game and never trailed. Upton belted a two-run shot in the first to give him a pair of homers in his first two games with the Braves. Halladay (0-1), who struggled with a sore shoulder last season and had a difficult spring training, gave up five runs and six hits in 3 1-3 innings. The two-time Cy Young Award winner struck out nine, but dropped to 0-4 with an 8.00 ERA in his last seven starts against Atlanta. "I felt good," Halladay said. "Felt good in the bullpen, felt good on the mound. Obviously horrible conditions to pitch in. That made it no fun, but thats not an excuse for not being able to get ahead of guys and do it consistently and put guys away quicker." The game was played in a chilly, steady drizzle, but the conditions hardly affected Maholm (1-0), who allowed six hits in 5 2-3 scoreless innings. He struck out six and walked one. "It was good," Maholm said. "Obviously, in the first start of the year, not the greatest conditions, but I felt comfortable." Gattis led off the fourth inning of his first major league game with a drive to left. Maholm struck out, but Halladays night was over after he issued a walk to Simmons. Raul Valdes came in and walked the next two batters before Freeman hit a bases-clearing double to make it 7-0. Freeman has driven in six of Atlantas 16 runs in the first two games. Maholm struggled last year against Philadelphia with an 8.64 ERA in two starts. But the left-hander stranded runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings in his first start of 2013. Cory Gearrin replaced Maholm with a runner on first in the sixth. He walked one before striking out Erik Kratz. The Phillies were just 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position. "I thought (Maholm) did a terrific job," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He mixed his pitches well and he did a nice job. Gave us a great opportunity to win the ballgame." Juan Francisco also singled in a run in the first as Atlanta quickly built a 3-0 lead. Halladay recorded his first eight outs on strikeouts, but he needed 79 pitches to make it through the first three innings. He was trying for win No. 200 and a spot alongside New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte as the only active pitchers to be 100 games over .500. Halladay was upset with himself for making such an early exit. "Id rather get beat 20-0 and pitch eight innings than pitch 3 1-3," he said. "Thats got to change." Chase Utley had a two-run double in the seventh for Philadelphia. Utley appeared to score a third run, but home plate umpire Mike Everitt called Michael Young out for runners interference at first and the inning ended. Heyward tacked on a two-run homer against Jonathan Papelbon in the eighth, but the Atlanta right fielder thought the key was making Halladay work. "We did wear him down," Heyward said. "We did make sure that we got some pitches to hit and we hit them hard." NOTES: The Braves struck out 16 times. ... Freeman has reached in six of his eight plate appearances this season. ... Philadelphia SS Jimmy Rollins played his 1,794th game to tie Richie Ashburn for second place on the Phillies career list. ... Braves CF B.J. The club and defenceman Chris Phillips have agreed to a three year deal worth approximately $9.25 million. He is making $3. . Top Picks: With 128 points over the last two seasons, John Tavares ranks sixth, and hes the one driving the Islanders offence. It would be easier to raise expectations if the Islanders provided him with a better supporting cast, but hes a reliable point-per-game option who would be higher than a top five fantasy centre if he could become a stronger plus player. COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil -- The Brazilian government has brushed aside the importance of more delays in completing 2014 World Cup stadiums, saying that missing FIFAs deadline will not affect the countrys ability to successfully host next years tournament. A day after FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said three stadiums would not be ready in time for the Dec. 31 deadline, Brazilian officials said they actually plan to deliver all six remaining venues after that date. They claim only three are delayed, with the other three being handed over after the expected date only because of problems accommodating the schedule of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who wants to be present for the ceremonies. Brazils Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo said Brazil is like a bride who gets to the wedding late, but the event still goes on as expected. "In every wedding that I attended the bride was late. Ive never seen a bride arrive on time. But Ive never seen a wedding not happen because of that," Rebelo said. "Its probable that there will be a delay here or there, but nothing too significant. What is important is that all of the stadiums will be ready (in the end)." FIFA has already said it will have to change plans at the venues because of the delivery delays. FIFA Marketing Director Thierry Weil said the schedule for the release of tickets has already been slightly altered because the seating plans have not been finalized, and footballs governing body said other areas will also be affected. "Due to the reduced timeline, FIFA, the LOC, government and stadium authorities are adjusting the stadium operational program to ensure that the stadiums are delivered and host events prior to the FIFA World Cup without compromissing on safety or quality," FIFA said in a statement. "We are in a much more advanced stage at this point in time than we were before the Confederations Cup," Brazils deputy sports minister Luis Fernandes said. "In March, there were still doubts whether the Maracana would be ready for the final. We are in a much better position now. The only doubt we have is related to the Sao Paulo stadium." Sao Paulo remains the biggest question mark after a crane collapse last week killed two workers and damaged part of the stadium. A report on the scale of the damage is expected by the end of the week. But there is still confusion about the delivery date of the other five stadiums that arent ready, with the government, local World Cup organizers and FIFA saying different things. The other six World Cup stadiums were ready for the Confederations Cup. Valcke had said that in addition to Sao Paulo, the southern city of Curitiba and the wetlands city of Cuiaba also would not be ready to deliver their stadiums by the end of the year as expected. He said they would likely be ready in January or February. Rebelo, the government official in charge of Brazils preparations for the World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics, said Wednesday that the stadium in Porto Alegre was also delayed, and that all six remaining stadiums will be only be delivered in January. The local World Cup organizing committee had said that only Sao Paulo and Curitiba were facing delays, and that Curitiba might not be ready until March. "They will all be delivered with enough time for the test events that are needed before the World Cup," Rebelo said. ' ' '
