Mogao Caves, also known as the Caves of a Thousand Buddhas on China tourism, is one of the Four Greatest Caves in China, together with Yungang Grottoes in Datong in Shanxi Province, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang in Henan and Maiji Mount Grottoes in Tianshui in Gansu. Mogao Caves is deemed as the most valuable cultural discovery in 20th century and was listed into World Cultural Heritage in 1987.

Dunhuang Mogao Caves is also known as "Thousand Buddha Caves", highlight of Silk Road travel. According to traditional information, the Mogao Grottoes were designed in 366 AD. There are 492 grottoes existing with some 45,000 rectangle metres of paintings, and 415 coloured clay-based numbers. It's worth the name of art value home of the China Country. The 275 grottoes designed in the later interval of the 16 Kingdoms are the first staying ones. There were noticeable impacts of Buddhism from the western areas upon the paintings. Take for example "Jataka of the Deer King".

The construction of the Mogao Caves started in 366 in the Qianqin Dynasty. In that year, a monk whose Buddhist name was Le Zun wandered to this place, and saw thousands of golden lights on the Sanwei Mountain looking like thousands of Buddhas. Thinking that this place must be a great place for Buddhism, the monk cut the first cave on the rock face. Afterwards, the construction work continued in the following dynasties, and did not stop until the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1271—1368). China Kung fu Tours may attract you after silk road tour.
