(Sports Network) - It is still too soon to be certain, but Jake Peavy could finally be back to his old ways, and that could be a huge boost for the Chicago White Sox. . The former Cy Young winner will make his fifth start for the White Sox since coming off the disabled list with a torn right latissimus and will take on the division rival Detroit Tigers in the series finale at U.S. Cellular Field. Peavy was thrown right into the fire following his injury having to face Anaheim, Texas and Boston on the road, while also squaring off against the Cleveland Indians. His most recent start came at Fenway Park, and in that contest, the hard-throwing right-hander held the Red Sox to just three runs in seven innings. He is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA on the year. The veteran hurler has made three career starts against the Tigers, and has enjoyed success in all three outings. While his ledger is just 2-1, Peavy has compiled an outstanding 1.29 earned run average against Detroit. Peavys counterpart is a pitcher who has also dealt with an array of injuries in his career in Brad Penny. On the heels of winning three straight games, the veteran right-hander has gone winless in his last two starts, allowing 10 runs on 16 hits to Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Through the first part of this season it is evident Penny is a different pitcher on the road. In five starts in foreign territory, he is just 1-3 and possesses a horrible 7.71 earned run average. Earlier this season Penny made his first career start against Chicago, and it was an impressive showing as the crafty twirler tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out three batters. The Tigers have claimed a victory in five of their last six games, and that includes yesterdays thriller, as Miguel Cabrera blasted a two-run homer in the ninth inning to back Justin Verlanders eight innings of two-run ball in Detroits 4-2 win. Verlander (6-3) scattered seven hits and struck out seven in another solid outing for Detroit, which got back on the winning track after losing the series opener. Brennan Boesch also had a two-run homer for the victors. Gordon Beckham had a two-run shot in fifth to tie the game for Chicago, which had its season long four-game win streak halted. Jesse Crain (2-2) gave up Cabreras two-run shot during his 1 1/3 innings on the bump to get the loss, while starter Edwin Jackson allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over six frames. Chicago could have taken the lead in the eighth with runners on the corners with one out. But Verlander blew a 100 m.p.h. fastball past Carlos Quentin for a second out. He then made a stabbing grab and throw during A.J. Pierzynskis comebacker while falling down at the front of the mound to end the frame. (The Prodigy) Penn took a shot at Georges St-Pierre for his concerns over what weight a proposed super-fight with Anderson Silva should be contested at. . The star shortstop left Saturdays game against the Yankees after two innings with tightness in his left hamstring. He went for an MRI on Sunday morning before arriving at Citi Field. Their 9-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday did, however, make the prospect of taking a cross-country trip home a whole lot more palatable. . The 35-year-old said he will retire after the Montreal Impact plays their final regular season game on Saturday against the New England Revolution. TORONTO -- A day after being demoted to the American Hockey League, T.J. Brennan gave the Toronto Maple Leafs another reason to call him back up. The 24-year-old scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Toronto Marlies to a 6-3 win over the St. Johns IceCaps in AHL action Saturday afternoon. Brennan opened the season by being named AHL player-of-the-week and was summoned by the Maple Leafs Wednesday. While he didnt see any game action in his brief stint, he says he got enough of a taste while practicing with the big club to keep hopeful for another re-call. "You see the level and the pace up there and you try and reflect your game off that speed," said Brennan. "Im just trying to do the things that elevate my game. Thats where I want to be." The hat trick was Brennans second of the season and he now leads the AHL in scoring with seven goals and 10 points in three contests. Wade MacLeod, John-Michael Liles and Stefan Legein had the other goals for Toronto (3-0-0) while Spencer Abbott and Trevor Smith chipped in with two assists apiece. Andrew Gordon, Jerome Samson and Will ONeill scored for St. Johns (1-2-1). Drew MacIntyre made 21 saves for the win as Jussi Olkinuora turned aside 27 shots in defeat. MacIntyre, who played with Brennan two seasons ago with the Rochester Americans, is familiarr with how Brennan plays an offensive minded game. "He could play forward easily, but hes good defensivly too," said MacIntyre. "Hes worked hard at that." Brennan scored two goals in the first 2:43 of the opening period to put the Marlies ahead. However, Toronto picked up three straight penalties, including a double minor to Sam Carrick for roughing, and the IceCaps scored three times to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission. Gordon put St. Johns on the board at 6:11 while ONeill and Samson added power-play goals. Marlies head coach Steve Spott was not pleased with his clubs lack of discipline in the opening 20 minutes, and questioned the double minor handed to Carrick. "Im really not sure what happened on that play," said Spott. "I didnt get an explanation so Im not sure what he did." Liles tied the game with a power-play goal at 15:28 of the second period and MacLeod put Toronto ahead in the final minute of the period. Legein added to the Marlies lead midway through the third period and Brennan capped the game with a goal into an empty net. "Sometimes the best defence is a good offence," said Brennan. Both clubs went 2 for 7 on the power play. ' ' '
