OTTAWA - The Conservative government has not ruled out a boycott of the Olympic Games in Beijing, says Defence Minister Peter MacKay. Alfred Morris Autographed Jersey . The issue has yet to be raised at the federal cabinet table, and until that happens, no decisions can be made, MacKay said Monday outside the House of Commons. "Without having the discussion we cant rule anything out, so were not at that point," MacKay told reporters after being asked about the issue. Chinas violent crackdown on riots in Tibet has prompted human rights groups to call for a boycott of the Games. Amnesty International has accused China of human rights abuses. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said he wont attend the opening ceremonies of the Games in August. But he has also stressed his absence has nothing to do with a boycott and that he planned to skip the ceremonies long before last months unrest in Tibet. The Tories have said a high-level government delegation will be sent to the opening ceremonies to represent Canada. Harpers decision was a personal one that does not reflect government policy, said MacKay. "The prime ministers statement that he wont be attending is a signal of a personal decision that hes taken. . . But as far as a policy or something reflective of government policy, we have not taken that decision just yet." MacKays director of communications, Dan Dugas, later said the issue would not be discussed at cabinet. Dugas said MacKay, the former foreign affairs minister, was only commenting on the matter because he was asked about it by reporters. Many Canadian athletes who have spent a lifetime training for the Olympics are concerned about protests disrupting their plans for the event. A number have said they would compete at the Games no matter where theyre held. Other countries have mixed plans for the opening ceremonies, but no nation has yet said it will boycott the Games. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has hinted he and the French team might boycott the opening ceremonies but that his countrys athletes would still take part in competition. U.S. President George W. McCoy and the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a five-year contract extension that runs through 2017. The deal is for a reported $45 million, with $20.765 million guaranteed. McCoy set franchise records in 2011 with 17 touchdowns rushing, and 20 total scores, while earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honours. He also led the NFL with 102 first downs and 48 runs of 10-plus yards, while finishing as the leagues fourth-leading rusher with 1,309 yards. "I love this team, and Im kind of a hometown kid from Harrisburg which is like an hour and a half away," McCoy said Thursday night. "Nothing could be better than being here for the long term.
