HOUSTON -- Mariners left-hander Joe Saunders would have preferred to keep going after throwing 86 pitches in Saturday nights 3-1 win over the Astros. But considering the struggles of both he and his team, he will take it. "We still won," Saunders said. "Thats all that matters." Saunders pitched into the sixth inning for his first win in nearly a month, and Seattle beat Houston. Kendrys Morales, Nick Franklin and Dustin Ackley each drove in a run in the first inning for the Mariners, who had lost six in a row before the series against the major league-worst Astros. Seattle will have Hisashi Iwakuma on the mound when it goes for a series sweep Sunday. Mariners manager Eric Wedge saw plenty of room for improvement after the game. "Youd like to keep going. I mean, we had opportunities," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "We played sloppy baseball in the second half of a baseball game. "We had opportunities offensively and misplayed some balls defensively, (but) in the end we won the ball game." Saunders (11-13) allowed an unearned run and six hits over 5 1-3 innings in his first win since Aug. 4 at Baltimore. The left-hander was 0-3 with an 8.31 ERA in his previous four starts. "I still think theres a full moon when I pitch or something, because there is some crazy (stuff) going on in my games," Saunders said. "So it was nice to get a W for sure." Matt Dominguez and Brandon Barnes had two hits apiece for Houston (44-91), which is headed for its third straight 100-loss season. Dallas Keuchel (5-8) got off to a rough start, and the Astros never recovered. Seattle jumped on Keuchel for three runs in the first inning. Morales had a run-scoring infield hit before Keuchel issued consecutive walks to Raul Ibanez and Franklin to force home another run. Ackley then made it 3-0 on a groundout that brought home Morales. Kyle Seager also had two hits for the Mariners. Keuchel had a nice outing after the rocky first, striking out eight in seven innings. He allowed four hits and walked two, at one point retiring 12 consecutive batters. "He threw well," Mariners shortstop Brad Miller said of Keuchel. "He had a good stretch. I know there (on) my second at-bat he was starting to get into a rhythm, so obviously were glad we jumped out early on him." Saunders left the game with two on and one out, with Wedge preferring to go with Carter Capps for the right-on-right matchup with Jake Elmore. "I wasnt happy about coming out of the game," Saunders said. "Im never happy about coming out of a game. I thought I had a lot left in the tank, but hes the manager for a reason and he makes those decisions." After Saunders left the game, Capps and Yoervis Medina each pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings before Danny Farquhar finished for his 11th save. "Saunders was a little erratic but controlled damage," Wedge said. "The bullpen did a nice job." Houston had a chance to get back in the game in the second. Dominguez led off with a single and Chris Carter then walked before Barnes grounded into a double play. The Astros loaded the bases with two walks, but rookie Cody Clark bounced into a forceout to end the threat, with shortstop Brad Miller making a key stop. The Astros scored in the fourth when Barnes singled with one out and scored on an error by Franklin at second. Houston went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. "We just cant seem to be able to get the big hit," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "Weve had plenty of opportunities and have had men in scoring position, but it just seems like the big hit is avoiding us at this point." NOTES: Mariners SS Brad Miller has reached safely in 12 consecutive games. ... Astros INF Jake Elmore recorded his first major league steal in the second inning. ... It kicked off with the well-deserved defeat last Saturday at the hands of a relegation-threatened Southampton. At a time, the club needed to be at full strength as ways to consolidate their position nestled amongst the Champions League contenders and Rafa the Rotator had other ideas as he rung the changes. The Spaniard left a number of key Starting XI contributors out of his team as ways to ensure they were fresh for Chelseas Easter Monday FA Cup tilt against the BPL Champions elect. In doing so, he exposed himself to the wrath of the fans, the board and the owner as his preferred St. Marys Starting XI did anything but achieve the desired outcome. Rafa though could care less of how that disparate bunch felt. We had precedent. Following the FA Cup victory at Middlesbrough back in late February, he delivered his now famous eulogy admonishing everyone from the substantial number of season ticket holders who continue to mock his appointment, the board for providing the interim tag he even dared to have a pop at Roman himself. Without taking a breath, he also publically admitted for the first time in a BBC Radio interview he would be on his bike to pastures new at seasons end. Never the type to miss an opportunity to get his excuses in early, Rafa finished how he started by tearing a significant strip off the fans who have mocked his appointment throughout his tenure - laying the blame for possible failure in the Champions League qualification stakes firmly at their door. It wouldnt be Rafas fault - the person charged to inspire greater performance from his players that would solely be the responsibility of the highly vocal unsupportive types. On the team bus back to Chelseas rather palatial training HQ in the leafy stockbroker belt confines of Cobham following the Southampton defeat Rafa was formulating his final plans for the encounter with Manchester United less than 48 hours later. It was a rather subdued Stamford Bridge this past Monday morning as club supporters began gathering amongst gathering storm clouds and the most blustery of conditions ahead of the unearthly lunch time encounter with Manchester United. Rafas team was almost unrecognizable to the one that took to the St. Marys pitch. Dare we say it resembled a most legitimate Starting XI. Although the temperature of the FA Cup Quarter-final never surpassed the unseasonably cold Easter weather, the smile on Rafas face at the final whistle could have even have lit up Kim Jong-Uns mood. Chelsea was in yet another FA Cup semifinal. Rafa continues along his very well-trod path of not ever meeting a knock out cup competitioon that he didnt adore.dddddddddddd In his pre-match press conference ahead of last nights Europa League quarter-final first leg, he was in very jovial mood. Even Ryan Bertrand admitted the mood around Stamford Bridge had elevated of late as he paid his manager likely the greatest of public compliments since the ex-Liverpool and Inter Milan guvnor took charge late last fall. Rafa stole the show when he took to task ex-assistant Ray Wilkins, who had questioned the managers rotation policy on television directly following Mondays victory over Manchester United, when he suggested Bertrand could also have played in the Southampton defeat. Rather sanguinely noting Easter Mondays date, with a significant sports medicine degree in hand Benitez told the gathered media throng he could explain Wilkins position. It was an April Fools Day joke. The very same day, Benitez had wiped the considerable smile off of Sir Alex Fergusons face. On Wednesday afternoon, he sent club legend Ray Wilkins to the naughty boys step. Rafa had come over all Jose Mourinho-like, perhaps in gathering anticipation of Romans prodigal son returning in the summer. The Mourinho theme continued Thursday night at the Europa League quarter-final first leg, as supporters continually sung his name as strewn across the Stamford Bridge stands were a number of Mourinho face masks. The mood prior to kick-off was significantly elevated from Mondays pre-match scenes. With the likes of Lampard, Terry and Torres re-inserted into the starting XI, one only had to look at the grin on the face of Bertrand during the traditional pre-match scenes as he couldnt help himself giggling uncontrollably at the sight of teammate Torres in full Machiavellian like face mask. El Nino with the well-taken brace had the last laugh though. Job done, Rafa stuffed his well-thumbed notes into his jacket pocket exited the pitch destined for the post match press conference. As the supporters spilled out into the Stamford Bridge surrounds many making their way for a celebratory pint at one of the abundance of watering holes that litter this particular part of south west London none of the traditional "Rafa Out" chants rang out for word footballs best known rotator. Wonder how many Rafa masks will be in attendance when they gather again for what will be Chelseas fourth match in a mere eight days.
